The back story

About Socialist-era Sofia: the architecture of the 20th century

Much of central and modern Sofia was built between the late 1940s and 1989: the monumental ensemble of the Largo, the National Palace of Culture, the great boulevards and the housing estates on the edge of town. Seen today as architecture, they are among the most striking sights in the city.

Rebuilding the centre

Sofia was badly damaged by bombing in 1943–44, and after the war the centre was rebuilt on a monumental scale, with wide boulevards and grand public buildings in the style of the time.

The Largo

The Largo, the ensemble of three great buildings around the square between St Nedelya and the Presidency, was built in the 1950s. Excavations for the metro revealed the streets and buildings of Roman Serdica beneath it, and they are now open as an archaeological complex in the heart of the square.

The Largo was built over the streets of Roman Serdica, and the ruins now lie open beneath it.

The National Palace of Culture

The National Palace of Culture (NDK), opened in 1981, is one of the largest congress and cultural centres in South-East Europe, a multi-faceted building at the end of a long park with fountains, still used for concerts, festivals and conferences.

The estates

Districts such as Mladost, Lyulin and Druzhba, built from the 1960s onwards, house a large part of the city’s population in blocks of flats, and their wide green spaces are a characteristic part of the Sofia landscape.

Our advice: walk from the Largo along Vitosha Boulevard to the National Palace of Culture, and visit the Museum of Socialist Art, where sculptures and paintings of the period are shown in a park and gallery as part of history.
