The back story

About Borisova Gradina: Sofia’s great park

Borisova Gradina, Tsar Boris’s Garden, is Sofia’s oldest and best-loved park, a great green space of avenues, lakes and woods east of the centre, laid out from the 1880s.

Swiss gardeners

The park was begun in 1884 by the Swiss gardener Daniel Neff and continued by others; it was later named after Tsar Boris III.

Lakes and avenues

Long avenues lead to the Lake with the Water Lilies, rose gardens and woods.

Borisova Gradina was laid out by Swiss gardeners from the 1880s.

Sport

The park is also home to stadiums, the Maria Luiza pool and sports grounds.

Our advice: walk from Eagles’ Bridge into the park, find the Lake with the Water Lilies and the rose garden, and stop at a park café. Autumn colours are lovely.
