East of the centre, around St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, lies one of Sofia’s most elegant quarters: Oborishte, with leafy streets of early 20th-century houses, embassies, small galleries and some of the city’s best cafés and restaurants.
The cathedral
St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral dominates its vast square, with the Church of St Sofia beside it, the church that gave the city its name, and the National Gallery’s icons in the crypt.
The Doctors’ Garden
Behind the National Library, the Doctors’ Garden, laid out around a monument to the medics who died in the war of 1877–78, is scattered with Roman architectural fragments among the trees.
The Doctors’ Garden is scattered with Roman stones.
Oborishte
Further east, Oborishte Street and the streets around it are lined with cafés, restaurants and bars in a quiet, residential setting.
