Sofia Hotel Balkan, now part of the Luxury Collection, occupies one wing of the Largo, the monumental ensemble built in the 1950s in the heart of the city. Its inner courtyard hides the 4th-century Rotunda of St George, and excavations under the square revealed the streets of Roman Serdica.

The Largo

The Largo is a monumental ensemble of three buildings around a square, built in the 1950s. It housed government buildings, TZUM department store and the hotel.

A hotel around a Roman church

The hotel was built around a courtyard where the red-brick Rotunda of St George, from the 4th century, the oldest building in Sofia, still stands.

Serdica underground

When the metro was built, excavations revealed streets, houses and churches of Roman Serdica, now displayed in the open-air Ancient Serdica Complex at the Serdika metro station.

Our advice: walk into the courtyard to see the Rotunda, then go down into the Ancient Serdica Complex. A drink at the hotel bar makes an elegant pause.
